A Case of Omphalocele
Abstract
The omphalocele is a rare congenital anomaly which has been reported to occur about once in every 5, 000 to 10, 000 births. It is a herniation of abdominal viscera into the base of the umbilical cord. The omphalocele necessitates emergency surgical correction, because the sac wall of it is apt to rupture and poorly resistant to bacterial invasion.
The author experienced a case of omphalocele of 10 hour-old infant, which could be classified clinically as a large intact, ruptured omphalocele of short duration. The literatures on the omphalocele are reviewed briefly.
